Dubrovnik in April: What to Expect

April is one of the smarter months to visit Dubrovnik. The crowds that make the Old Town genuinely unpleasant in July and August have not yet arrived, the sea is too cold for swimming but the walls and streets are perfect for exploring, and the weather is warm enough to be comfortable. It is the best version of Dubrovnik for people who want to actually enjoy it.

Weather

April in Dubrovnik brings daytime temperatures of 16C to 19C, with cool evenings around 10C. The Adriatic is still cold for swimming (around 16C water temperature), but the air is warm and pleasant. Sunshine is common, with occasional spring showers. It is excellent sightseeing weather.

Crowds and Prices

Dubrovnik in July and August is at dangerous overcrowding levels. April is a completely different experience. The Old Town is busy, particularly on weekends and when cruise ships dock, but it is walkable and enjoyable. Hotel prices are significantly lower than summer, particularly for sea-view accommodation that costs a premium in peak season. Book ahead for the Easter long weekend.

What's On

Easter is celebrated with Catholic religious processions through the Old Town, which is striking in the limestone setting. The Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra season continues in April. The cable car to Mount Srd is operational and the views in April light are excellent. The restaurant terraces along Stradun (the main street) open fully in April.

One Thing to Watch

Cruise ships. Even in April, large ships dock outside the Old Town and send thousands of visitors in through the Pile Gate between roughly 9am and 4pm. To experience the Old Town without that pressure, visit the walls and main sights before 9am or after 4pm. Check the Port of Dubrovnik website for ship schedules before you plan your day.
