Dublin in October has a strong argument for being the best month to visit the city. The shoulder season brings cheaper prices, more space in the pubs, and easier access to the things worth doing. And then there's Halloween, which Dublin takes seriously in a way that surprises most visitors. The city goes properly atmospheric in late October and it's worth timing your trip around it.
Weather
Expect classic Irish autumn: 11-14°C, overcast, occasional rain, and a wind that comes from wherever it decides to that day. Dublin is never really warm but it's also rarely punishing. Pack a waterproof layer and wear it. The upside is that Dublin's indoor culture, its pubs, its literary history, its cafe scene, is designed for exactly this weather. A rainy afternoon in a good Dublin pub is not a problem; it's the experience.
Crowds and Prices
Quieter than the summer peak, with lower hotel prices and more manageable crowds at the major sites. Trinity College and the Book of Kells are busy year-round but October visits are notably more comfortable than July or August. The pubs in Temple Bar are always busy, but the more interesting neighbourhood pubs in areas like Stoneybatter, Portobello, and Ranelagh have proper breathing room.
What's On
Dublin Halloween is one of the best Halloween events in Europe and genuinely worth building a trip around. The city hosts the Bram Stoker Festival in late October, a multi-day event with theatre, tours, film, and street spectacle that leans into Dublin's Gothic literary connections. The wider city embraces Halloween with street events, bar specials, and costumes everywhere. If you're visiting late October, this is the defining event and it's excellent.
One Thing to Watch
Late October accommodation prices spike around the Halloween and Bram Stoker Festival weekend. Book early or adjust your dates slightly to avoid the peak. The event itself is worth the price bump if you're genuinely interested, but if you're coming for a quieter city break, avoid the last weekend of October and you'll get the best of both worlds.
