Dublin in December has a particular energy that you either love or find overwhelming, depending on what you came for. The Irish do Christmas with genuine enthusiasm: the pubs are packed, the city centre is lit up, and the craic is at full volume. Early December is lively but manageable. The week before Christmas is full-on, with shopping crowds on Grafton Street and the pub scene running at capacity. Know what you're walking into.

Weather

Cold, wet, and windy. Dublin in December averages 5°C to 9°C, with rain a realistic expectation on most days. The Irish weather is famously unreliable, but you can rely on it being damp. A proper waterproof jacket is not optional. The good news is that December weather rarely stops anyone having a good time in Dublin, largely because half the things worth doing there are indoors.

Crowds and Prices

December is split clearly by the Christmas shopping season. Early December is busy in the shopping areas but normal in the pubs and tourist sights. Kilmainham Gaol, the Guinness Storehouse, and the Book of Kells are all manageable with advance bookings. The final week before Christmas turns Grafton Street and Henry Street into a genuine scrum, and pub sessions on weekends fill up fast. Flights over Christmas and New Year are among the most expensive of the year, driven by Irish diaspora returning home. If you're flying in from outside Ireland, early December is significantly cheaper.

What's On

The Grafton Street Christmas lights are a Dublin institution and go up in late November. There's a Christmas market in the Smithfield Square area that's grown in recent years. The real December draws are the pubs: a session in a good traditional pub in Temple Bar or the Liberties, with live trad music and mulled cider, is the thing Dublin does better in December than any other city. St Stephen's Day (26 December) is a public holiday and the city comes to a relative standstill. New Year's Eve is celebrated with a city centre street party and fireworks, though the pub scene is the bigger draw for most visitors.

One Thing to Watch

The Guinness Storehouse is one of Europe's most visited attractions, and in December it books up. Don't assume you can walk up on the day. Pre-book a timed entry slot at least a week in advance, and book before you travel in the Christmas week period.
