April is one of Budapest's best months. The Danube is running high and looks dramatic, the thermal baths are fully operational without the summer queues, and the city's extraordinary architecture gets shown off by spring light. It is still a great value destination by Western European standards, and April keeps it on the affordable end of the scale.
Weather
April temperatures range from 8C at night to 17C during the day, with warm spells possible from mid-month onward. It feels like genuine spring: comfortable for walking, with occasional showers. A light jacket is sufficient for most of April, though early in the month you will want a mid-layer. The Buda hills are green and walkable.
Crowds and Prices
Budapest is increasingly popular, but April is not peak season. The Fisherman's Bastion, Chain Bridge, and Buda Castle are busy at weekends but accessible. The thermal baths (Szechenyi and Gellert) are a major draw year-round; April queues are shorter than summer. Hotel prices are noticeably lower than in June to August. You can still find excellent value central accommodation in April.
What's On
The Budapest Spring Festival runs in late March and into April, covering classical music, opera, dance, and theatre across the city's venues. It is one of the best arts festivals in Central Europe and worth timing your visit around if it aligns. Easter brings traditional Hungarian folk events and decorated egg displays in some squares. The ruin bar scene operates year-round.
One Thing to Watch
Budapest Spring Festival tickets for headline events sell out months in advance. If you are visiting partly for the festival, check the programme and book early. Separately, the Easter long weekend brings higher hotel prices in central Pest, particularly the fifth and sixth districts closest to the tourist centre.
Our Budapest guide covers the baths, the castle district, and the practical logistics of getting around one of Europe's most rewarding cities.
