Bruges in December: What to Expect

Bruges in December is not a secret. It's one of the most recommended Christmas market cities in Europe, and for good reason: the medieval centre looks like it was purpose-built for this season. But that reputation brings visitors in serious numbers, particularly in the three weeks before Christmas. Know what you're walking into and it's one of the best city breaks of the year. Go expecting a quiet escape and you'll be disappointed.

Weather

Cold and damp, in the Belgian way. Temperatures sit around 4°C to 8°C, with regular rain and the occasional frost. The city looks genuinely atmospheric in these conditions: mist over the canals, medieval spires lit against a dark sky, the smell of waffles from every second street. A waterproof jacket is essential. If you hit a crisp, clear December day in Bruges, it's one of the best things a city break can offer.

Crowds and Prices

This is where Bruges earns its honest warning. Early December on weekdays is manageable. Weekends in the run-up to Christmas are busy in a way that can feel overwhelming in such a compact city: the Markt square and the main shopping streets become genuinely crowded by midday. If you can visit midweek, do it. Hotels fill up quickly for December weekends, and prices reflect the demand. That said, Bruges is worth it even with some crowds.

What's On

The Winter Glow festival transforms the city through most of December. The centrepiece is an ice rink on the Markt square, accompanied by light shows on the main buildings, a Christmas market along the Jan Van Eyckplein and around the Belfry, and the usual Belgian Christmas market staples: Gluehwein, speculoos, Belgian chocolates, and proper frites. The light installations at the Gruuthusemuseum and around the canal circuit are worth doing in the evening. Bruges also has solid range of Belgian beer cafes that become particularly appealing in December, when a dark Trappist inside a candlelit brown bar is exactly the right call.

One Thing to Watch

Bruges is tiny. Everything is walkable from everywhere, which is a blessing, but it also means there's nowhere to escape the crowds on busy December weekends. If you're visiting on a Saturday in the week before Christmas, plan to be out very early or stay late rather than trying to push through the peak-hour crush at midday.
