Bruges in April: What to Expect

Bruges in April is close to its best. The chocolate-box medieval centre looks even better with spring flowers and clear skies, the tourists are there but not yet at the summer wall-to-wall levels, and the weather is mild enough to enjoy canal-side walks without a heavy coat. It is a good month to visit as long as you book ahead.

April temperatures in Bruges sit between 8C at night and 14C during the day. It can feel warmer in the sun, particularly in the sheltered squares. Rain is a regular possibility. Bring a compact waterproof and you will be fine. The light in spring, when it is clear, is excellent for photography along the canals.

Crowds and Prices

Bruges is a small city that absorbs visitors unevenly. The historic centre is compact, which means it feels crowded earlier and more intensely than larger cities. April is busy on weekends, particularly the Easter long weekend, when Belgian and Dutch day-trippers arrive in volume. Weekday visits in early April are noticeably quieter. Hotels and central B&Bs are reasonably priced compared to summer, but book ahead for Easter weekend.

The Holy Blood Procession (Heilig Bloedprocessie) is Bruges' most famous religious event, but it takes place on Ascension Day in May, not April. April's calendar is quieter on major events, but the city's beer culture, museums, and chocolate shops are available year-round. The Bruges Beer Experience and Choco-Story museum are good options for wet days.

One Thing to Watch

Easter weekend in Bruges is crowded and prices jump. The city is genuinely overwhelmed on Easter Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with coach tour groups arriving from Brussels and Amsterdam. If you want the calmer version of Bruges, arrive Monday to Wednesday and avoid the Easter weekend entirely. The experience of wandering the canals without a crowd is significantly better.
