Berlin in January suits a certain type of traveller: someone who wants museums, music, and a working city rather than café terraces and sunshine. It's genuinely cold, the days are short, and the outdoor markets from Christmas are gone. But the city's indoor culture scene is excellent, and prices are low.

January temperatures in Berlin typically range from -3°C to 4°C. Snow is possible and not uncommon. Expect overcast skies most days, with limited daylight hours. A proper winter coat, warm layers, waterproof boots, and a hat are essential, not optional.

January is low season and it shows. Major museums like the Pergamon, the Jewish Museum, and the DDR Museum are quieter than usual. Hotel prices are among the lowest of the year. If you're on a budget, January is one of the best-value months to visit Berlin.

Berlin's club and live music scene peaks in winter when the city turns inward. January also sees the start of the Berlin Fashion Week and various gallery openings. The Berlinale film festival doesn't start until February, but the run-up period adds energy to the city's arts scene.

Reduced daylight means you have fewer usable outdoor hours. The sun sets around 4pm. Plan your outdoor sightseeing for midday and use the longer evenings for indoor culture, food, and nightlife.
