Berlin in summer is genuinely good. Temperatures sit between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius through July and August, the city's parks and outdoor beer gardens fill up, and long daylight hours mean you can pack a lot into each day. It is not extreme heat and not reliably dry. Thunderstorms are a real part of a Berlin summer and they can be dramatic. Pack for warmth, sun, and sudden weather changes in equal measure.

The Heat/Weather Strategy

Berlin's summer climate is continental: warm, sometimes hot for a day or two at a stretch, but prone to sudden downpours and sharp evening temperature drops. A day that starts at 28 degrees can end at 16 after a thunderstorm rolls through in the late afternoon. The practical response is layers you can add and remove and waterproofing that actually works.

The city's lake and park culture comes alive in summer. Wannsee, Tempelhofer Feld, and the Tiergarten are legitimate parts of a Berlin summer trip, not tourist box-ticking.

City-Specific Must-Haves

A packable waterproof jacket is the single most important item. Not a lightweight rain layer: an actual waterproof. Berlin's summer storms are heavy and do not care that you have another three museums to visit. Keep it in your day bag every day.

Comfortable walking shoes with good soles handle the variety of surfaces well: cobblestones in Mitte, long pavements in Prenzlauer Berg, and uneven terrain in the outdoor markets.

Sunscreen earns its place on clear summer days. Berlin's UV index in July is higher than many visitors expect given the latitude. A day at Wannsee without protection is a regrettable choice.

An extra layer for evenings, a light cotton jumper or long-sleeved top, is useful most nights. Even in August, evenings after a storm drop noticeably.

Casual, comfortable clothes cover everything Berlin requires. The city is not formal. Nightlife ranges from cargo-shorts casual to more considered looks depending on where you are going, but smart-casual covers the full range of restaurants and bars.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy formal clothing is wasted weight. Berlin dresses down, even at nicer restaurants. Leave behind anything that will not survive being slightly rained on: the city's weather does not accommodate precious fabrics.

Resist overpacking shoes. One solid pair of walking trainers and one slightly smarter pair for evenings covers everything.

Plan the Full Trip

Knowing what to wear is one thing. Knowing which parts of Berlin to spend time in, how to navigate the public transport system, and what the city's history trail looks like on the ground is another. Our Berlin cheat sheet handles that.
