Amsterdam in February: What to Expect

Amsterdam in February is for people who prefer canal reflections over canal crowds. It is genuinely cold, occasionally grey, and consistently cheaper than the warmer months. The trade-off is a city that feels like itself again: locals outnumber tourists, museums have breathing room, and a brown cafe with a beer is genuinely earned. Valentine's weekend nudges prices up slightly for central hotels, but nothing dramatic by Amsterdam standards.

Weather

February sits between 2C and 7C. It rains regularly, usually in short bursts rather than all-day soaks. Wind off the canals makes it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Pack a waterproof outer layer, warm mid-layer, and decent walking shoes. Snow is rare but possible.

Crowds and Prices

This is low season in a high-season city. Flight and hotel prices drop noticeably. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum still need timed entry, but availability is easier to come by. Valentine's weekend sees a small spike in hotel rates for central hotels, particularly in the Jordaan and Canal Belt. Book a week out and you will avoid most of that.

What's On

Amsterdam's February calendar is quieter than other European cities. The city does not host Carnival in any large organised form, but some bars and clubs run themed nights around Mardi Gras. Chinese New Year brings events to the Nieuwmarkt area if it falls in February. The main draw is the general atmosphere: ice skating rinks are sometimes still running in early February, and the Dutch National Opera season is in full swing.

One Thing to Watch

Cycling in February is doable but the canal towpaths and cobbled streets become slippery when wet or frosted. Rental bikes are still widely available, but factor in that riding in a heavy coat and wind is a different experience from the summer. If you are not a confident cyclist, walking and trams cover the same ground with less drama.
