Amsterdam in April: What to Expect

April is one of Amsterdam's best months and one of its most demanding. The tulips are at or near peak, the city wakes up properly after winter, and on 27 April it throws one of the loudest street parties in Europe. Come prepared and it is genuinely brilliant. Arrive without a plan and you will spend King's Day trapped on a canal with nowhere to stand.

Weather

Temperatures in April sit between 7C at night and 14C during the day. Spring sunshine is real but unreliable. Rain comes and goes quickly. It rarely stays miserable all day, but it rarely stays dry either.

Crowds and Prices

Early April is proper shoulder season. Hotels are reasonably priced, queues at the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are manageable, and the city feels human. That changes around King's Day (27 April). Central Amsterdam fills to capacity. Hotels in the centre charge peak rates for the surrounding nights. If you are visiting for King's Day specifically, book two to three months ahead. If you want to avoid it, arrive before 24 April or after 28 April and you will get shoulder-season Amsterdam at its best.

What's On

King's Day on 27 April is the headline. The city turns orange, canal boats pack the water, flea markets pop up across every neighbourhood, and the street parties run from morning until well past midnight. It is a genuine cultural event, not just a tourist spectacle.

Keukenhof Gardens, about 45 minutes from the city, is open through April and into May. It is the best tulip display in the world and worth the trip. Go on a weekday and arrive early. The Vondelpark concerts start up in late April as the weather improves.

One Thing to Watch

King's Day (27 April) transforms Amsterdam completely. If you are there that day, embrace it: wear orange, find a neighbourhood flea market, get on a canal boat if you booked one months ago. If you are not there for King's Day, avoid arriving on 26 or 27 April. Central accommodation is overpriced, the city is at full capacity, and the experience is overwhelming rather than enjoyable unless you planned specifically for it.
