The timing of accommodation booking matters more than most travelers realise. Book too early and you lock in a price before competition has driven it down. Book too late and the best options are taken. The sweet spot depends on the city, the season, and whether you're staying in a hotel or an Airbnb.
The General Rule: 6-12 Weeks for Most City Breaks
For mainstream European city breaks from the UK (Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Prague), booking 6-12 weeks in advance is the practical range. You'll find good availability, competitive pricing, and time to compare options without urgency.
Inside four weeks, inventory shrinks meaningfully and prices rise at well-located hotels. Inside two weeks, you're taking what's left.
When to Book Earlier
Peak season and high-demand events: July and August in any major city, New Year, Christmas markets (December in Bruges, Prague, Vienna, Strasbourg), major festivals. For Amsterdam during tulip season (April), Barcelona in late June, or any major European event weekend, book 3-6 months ahead. Hotels near the most popular areas sell out and don't come back.
Very popular or small-inventory cities: Venice is the clearest example. Good hotels at reasonable prices go early. Dubrovnik, Santorini, and the smaller Italian towns are similar. Rule of thumb: the more Instagram-driven the destination, the earlier you need to book.
Specific property requirements: If you have a must-stay hotel or a very specific requirement (canal view, Acropolis view, ground floor accessible room), book as early as that detail matters to you.
When Booking Late Is Fine
Last-minute deals exist in less popular seasons. A mid-January trip to Brussels or a late-October city break to Berlin can be booked two to three weeks out without paying a penalty. Budget hotel inventory in large cities often has availability close to travel dates, and apps like HotelTonight offer genuine last-minute discounts (more on this below).
Hotels vs Airbnb Timing
Hotels reprice dynamically and availability fluctuates. Airbnb listings are generally set by individual hosts and don't follow the same dynamic pricing model (though some superhosts do use pricing tools). For Airbnb, good properties in popular areas often book 2-4 months ahead for peak summer, but can remain available 4-6 weeks out in shoulder season.
Cancel-for-free policies (common on Booking.com and some hotel sites) change the calculus. Book early with free cancellation, keep monitoring for better options, cancel and rebook if something better appears.
