The last morning of a city break is not wasted time. It's structured differently from the other mornings: no new attractions, no sightseeing, but not spent sitting in a hotel room watching the clock either. There's a version of a departure morning that closes the trip properly.

Store Luggage at 10am, Not Later

Check out, use the hotel's bag storage, and leave with your day bag. Do not drag a suitcase around the city for three hours. Nearly every hotel and most hostels will hold bags for the day free or for a small fee. If you're not staying at a hotel, Stasher and Bounce are paid luggage storage networks with locations in most European cities.

Luggage stored by 10am gives you until lunchtime or early afternoon as a free, unburdened person in the city. This is the difference between a good departure morning and a mediocre one.

One Good Coffee, Somewhere You Like

Not the airport coffee. The café near the hotel you've been meaning to try, or the one you went to on day two and wanted to go back to. Sit down. Have the coffee slowly. You have time.

This is the ritual that closes the trip. You're still in the city, not already thinking about the journey home.

The Short Walk You Haven't Done

Most city breaks leave at least one neighbourhood walk undone. Do a short version of it on the departure morning. Not a full itinerary. A twenty-minute walk through a street or two you meant to explore. No pressure to see anything specific. Just the final piece of the city that you can take with you.

The Debrief Breakfast

If you're travelling with someone, departure morning is the natural debrief. Over breakfast, the conversation is: what was the best thing, what would you do differently, would you come back. These conversations are worth having while you're still in the city rather than in the car from the airport.

Airport Timing: Two Hours, Not Three

For European short-haul flights, two hours before departure is enough if you're travelling carry-on only. Two hours and fifteen minutes if you're checking a bag or flying with a budget carrier known for long security queues. Three hours is anxiety, not prudence, and it costs you an hour of being in the city.

Work backward from departure time. Be ruthless about what you actually need versus what feels safe. The airport is not the trip.
