Tivoli Park (Park Tivoli) is Ljubljana's largest park and one of the most extensive urban green spaces in a Central European capital. Running from the city centre westward into forested hillside, it covers around 5 km² and contains woodland walks, a pond, cycling paths, a swimming pool complex, and the Tivoli Mansion housing the International Centre of Graphic Arts.

The Park Layout

The main entrance on Tivolska cesta is a 10-minute walk from the old town — a wide promenade designed by Plečnik (naturally) running between chestnuts and lindens to the Tivoli Mansion at the top. The promenade is used for outdoor exhibitions, running, and the general Ljubljana habit of being outside whenever the weather permits.

Beyond the formal promenade, the park extends into Rožnik Hill — wooded, with unmarked paths good for an hour's exploration. The hill rises to 394 metres and has a small chapel and a traditional inn (Gostilna na Rožniku) near the top.

Cycling

Tivoli has dedicated cycling paths that connect to the city's broader cycle network. The route from the old town through Tivoli and out to the Sava River (north of the city) is the most popular cycling excursion — approximately 10 km round trip, mostly flat and car-free once inside the park.

BicikeLJ stations are at the park entrance. For longer rides, rental shops near the old town have day-hire bikes.

The Pond (Tivoli Ribnik)

A natural pond in the lower section of the park, popular with families and for feeding ducks. The surroundings are shaded and provide a cooler alternative to the exposed riverside in summer.

International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC)

The Tivoli Mansion houses the International Centre of Graphic Arts — a museum focused on contemporary printmaking, with rotating exhibitions and the biennial International Biennial of Graphic Arts (Ljubljana Biennial). The Biennial, running since 1955, is one of the oldest and most significant international graphic arts exhibitions. Free on Sundays.

Swimming

The Tivoli swimming pools (Kopališče Tivoli) are outdoor pools in the park, open in summer. Standard public pools — not particularly distinctive, but functional and cheap.

Our Take

A morning walk through Tivoli is one of the quieter pleasures of Ljubljana — away from the tourist economy, genuinely local, and the park is large enough to get properly lost in if you take the woodland paths rather than the promenade. Combine with the Rožnik hilltop inn for lunch.
