The transition happens on day two or three, almost never on day one. Day one is logistics and orientation and the disorientation of arriving somewhere new. The shift comes later, and it arrives quietly.

The Signs It Has Happened

You stop checking the map every five minutes. You know roughly which direction is north without looking. You have a route from the accommodation to a café you've been to twice, and you walk it without thinking. You know which street to avoid because it's always congested, and you use the parallel one instead.

You have a regular café. Not just a café you went to once and liked, but one where you've been twice and they recognise you, or at least where you know what to order and where to sit. This is a small thing that makes a disproportionate difference to how the city feels.

You stop photographing everything. The first day, everything is photographed. By day three, you photograph the things that genuinely strike you, not the things you feel obliged to record.

How to Accelerate It

Stay in one area. Changing accommodation between nights or staying in the tourist centre resets the orientation clock. Pick a neighbourhood and stay in it. You build local knowledge faster when you're not constantly relocating.

Eat at the same places twice. This feels counterintuitive on a short trip because you want to try everything. But returning to somewhere good does more for your sense of belonging in the city than visiting a new place every time. The second visit to a café is when it starts to feel like yours.

Walk the same route morning and evening. The city looks different in the morning light and the evening light, and walking the same route at both times gives you a sense of the city's rhythm that no single walk provides. By day two you know which market is still running at five in the afternoon and which streets fill up after seven.

Why It Matters

The tourist mode is exhausting. You are constantly processing new information, making decisions with insufficient context, and operating at a heightened state of attention. The temporary local mode is restful. You have enough context to relax into the city rather than analyse it. The last day of a good city break should feel more like a slow morning in a familiar place than the first day of an itinerary.
