You can read about a city for a month and still not know which restaurant will be best on the specific Tuesday in September when you visit. The research trap is real, and the people most susceptible to it are often the ones who would enjoy the trip the most if they got on the plane.

The Two Decisions With Deadlines

The flight and the hotel are the decisions that need to be made ahead of time because prices move and availability closes. Everything else, restaurants, day trips, museums, activities, can be decided in the week before you go or on arrival. These are the decisions that do not benefit from three months of research because the conditions that make them good decisions (what you feel like, what the weather is, what you have already done) only exist when you are there.

Book the flight. Book the hotel. The rest is optional until it needs to be done.

The Research Trap

The research trap works like this: you start with a simple question (which neighbourhood should I stay in) and end up forty-five minutes later reading a forum thread from 2019 about a dispute between two hotels in an area you are not even considering. The returns on travel research diminish sharply after the first two hours. The foundational decisions are made early. Everything after that is edge-case optimisation that often produces no benefit.

What Over-Research Actually Costs

The cost of not going is a trip that did not happen. The cost of a suboptimal restaurant is one disappointing meal. The cost of staying in the slightly wrong neighbourhood is that you walk an extra ten minutes to the thing you wanted to see. These are not equivalent costs, and the person treating them as equivalent is making an error of scale.

The Trip You Planned Versus the Trip You Had

The meal you remember is rarely the one you researched for three weeks. It is the one you found by walking past it at the right moment, or the one the hotel owner recommended, or the one with no reviews that was full of locals. The trip that felt magical was not the most researched one. Book it. The trip will produce its own best moments.
