Most visitors to Amsterdam cross the IJ by accident, in the sense that they board the ferry behind Centraal Station without quite registering it's happening. The crossing to Amsterdam Noord is short, free, and surprisingly good. The views back toward the city are better than any canal cruise postcard.
But there's a second ferry, and most tourists never take it.
The Ferry to NDSM Wharf
NDSM Wharf is a former shipyard in Amsterdam Noord that's been converted into a sprawling creative space: street art, studios, a large flea market at weekends, several decent bars and restaurants, and open water on three sides. The ferry runs from behind Centraal Station (the free ferry piers are to the west of the main entrance) and takes about 15 minutes.
It runs roughly every 30 minutes during the day and is free in both directions. No ticket, no card, just board and cross.
What's There
The wharf feels different from the rest of Amsterdam. It's open, industrial, and unhurried in a way that central Amsterdam never quite manages.
Street art: The buildings at NDSM are covered in large-scale murals that change regularly. Worth a slow walk around.
IJ-hallen flea market: On selected weekends, one of Europe's largest covered flea markets takes over the wharf. Thousands of sellers, vintage clothing, books, furniture, and genuine oddities. Entry is a few euros and it fills up by 10am.
NDSM Plein: The central square has food trucks and pop-up bars that stay busy on warm evenings. The view of the water is good from the picnic tables outside.
Pllek: A beach bar and restaurant built from shipping containers right on the waterfront. Popular enough that it gets crowded on summer weekends, but worth the visit for the atmosphere and the swim area.
When to Go
The crossing is worth it any time, but a few windows work well in particular. Sunday morning has a quieter crossing and good light for photos of the cityscape from the water. Summer evenings are best at Pllek and the outdoor bars when the temperature drops and the crowds thin. For the IJ-hallen, check the site for dates before you go: it runs roughly once a month.
The IJ Ferry to Noord
The more frequently used free ferry runs to Amsterdam Noord more broadly. This one runs every few minutes and is used by commuters as much as visitors. Worth taking just for the crossing itself. The views of the Centraal Station waterfront and the IJ river are genuinely good, especially in the early morning when the light is flat and the water is still.
A Practical Note
Bikes are allowed on both ferries. If you're cycling around Amsterdam, the NDSM ferry extends your range considerably at no extra cost. Ride across, spend a few hours, and cycle back when you're done.
