Riva del Garda is Lake Garda's action capital and genuine local town. A funicular ascending the cliff offers the lake's best views at sunrise, a waterfall walk provides forest tranquility, and the Ponale Trail offers Europe's best lake-view cycling. It's less touristy than Sirmione but more active than Limone. Two to three days here is ideal.
The Funicular (Funivia del Monte Baldo... Sort Of)
Riva has a cable car ascending the cliff to a viewpoint (Navigarda 1700m). It's not as famous as Malcesine's rotating cabin, but the views are arguably better—you're looking directly down at the entire northern lake from above.
Cost: €12 round-trip, €7 one-way.
Duration: 15 minutes ascent, 15 minutes descent.
Timing: Best at sunrise (6-7 AM summer) when the light is perfect and crowds nonexistent. Evening (6-7 PM) is secondary-best.
What you see: Lake Garda below, Malcesine on the opposite shore, Dolomites to the northeast, Limone to the west.
Alternative: If you skip the cable car, walk up the cliff trail (45 minutes). Free but steeper and no dramatic views until the top.
Real assessment: Sunrise ride here beats Malcesine's cable car on pure view quality. If you only do one cable car experience, make it Riva at sunrise.
Cascata del Varone (Waterfall Walk)
A 5-minute drive from Riva (or 20-minute bus) leads to the Cascata del Varone (Varone Waterfall), a 100m cascade in a narrow gorge. It's genuine nature, cool and peaceful.
What to expect:
- 15-20 minute walk through a forest gorge.
- Constant sound and spray of the waterfall.
- Cool temperature (refreshing in summer).
- Wooden stairs and pathways, well-maintained.
Cost: €3 entry.
Duration: 30-45 minutes total (walk + waterfall exploration).
Best time: Morning (cooler, less crowded). Avoid midday heat.
Parking: €2 at the site.
Real appeal: It's refreshingly quiet compared to town crowds. The gorge is narrow and atmospheric.
Combined with: Combine with the funicular for a full morning activity (sunrise funicular, drive to waterfall, explore, return to Riva for lunch).
The Ponale Trail
The Ponale Trail (Sentiero del Ponale) is the most scenic bike path on Lake Garda—a 10km carved-into-cliff route from Riva to Limone with constant water views.
By bike: 1-1.5 hours one-way. Mostly flat, some short climbs.
Rental: Bikes available in Riva (€15-25/day). E-bikes (€35-50) worth it if less fit.
Highlights:
- Carved-into-cliff sections with views straight down to the lake.
- Cascata dei Ruffà (waterfall) halfway point.
- Limestone cliffs, Alpine vegetation.
Suggested route: Bike Riva to Limone (1.5 hours), lunch in Limone, return by ferry or bike back.
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. No technical sections, mostly good surface.
Real experience: One of Lake Garda's genuinely memorable activities. Do it.
A 2-Day Riva Itinerary
Day 1: Funicular, Town, Waterfall

8-9 AM: Breakfast at a waterfront cafe. Riva is peaceful at this hour.
9 AM-12 PM: Explore Riva proper. Walk the harbor, old town streets, waterfront. Visit the castle (Rocca del Garrison, minimal fee, minimal appeal). This is local-character time.

1-2 PM: Drive to Cascata del Varone.
2-3 PM: Waterfall walk and exploration.
3-4 PM: Return to Riva.
4-6 PM: Relax at hotel, or explore Riva's beaches (small, free or €2-3 entry).

Day 2: Ponale Trail and Limone
8 AM: Breakfast, rent bikes.
8:30-10 AM: Bike the Ponale Trail to Limone (1.5 hours with stops for photos).

Total time: 2 full days.
Riva as a Base
Character: Riva has genuine local vibe. Locals outnumber tourists outside peak season. There are sports bars, working fishermen, normal Italian life.
Hotels: €70-120/night for good 3-star. Cheaper than Sirmione, less glamping-heavy than Malcesine.
Food: Excellent restaurants. Local specialties include fish from the lake. €12-16 pasta, €15-22 mains.
Activities: Water sports (windsurfing, kitesurfing), hiking, cycling, swimming. Less "museum tourism," more "active living."
Disadvantages: 45+ minutes to southern attractions (Gardaland, Bardolino). Windy in spring (March-May). Less "postcard perfect" than Sirmione or Malcesine.
Best for: Active travelers, water sports enthusiasts, people seeking local character over tourist infrastructure.
Windsurfing and Water Sports
Riva (and nearby Torbole) are Europe's best windsurfing spots. Wind patterns make the lake reliable for sports.
Windsurfing lesson: €50-80 for 1-2 hours with instruction.
Rental: Boards €30-40/day. Lessons + rental bundles available.
Best months: March-May and September-October (strongest winds).
Not interested in windsurfing: The strong winds are just an environmental fact. Bring a windbreaker even in summer.
Local tip: Evenings are calmer (wind peaks midday). Swim in late afternoon if you're not a water sports person.
Restaurants in Riva
Trattoria al Porto: €12-16 pasta, €15-20 mains. Waterfront, good fish.
Ristorante Casadalina: €14-18 pasta, €18-24 mains. Upscale, local specials.
Pizzeria Sotto le Mura: €9-12 pizza. Simple, good.
Al Volto: €3.50-5 aperitivo with free snacks. Local bar, authentic.
Strategy: Eat at trattorie, not fine dining. Quality is high, prices moderate.
Practical Logistics
Location: North shore, 40km from Sirmione, 25km from Malcesine.
Getting there:
- By car: Park at town parking (€1.50/hour, €10-12/day).
- By ferry: From Limone, Malcesine, or Sirmione.
- By bus: Line 140 from Malcesine (30 minutes) or Limone (10 minutes).
Best time: May, June, September, October. July-August is hot. November-March is cold and windy.
Weather: Winds are consistent. Lake is cooler than south shore (water temp: 12°C winter, 23°C summer).
Money-Saving Tips
Skip the castle. Rocca del Garrison is minimal. Spend your money on experiences instead.
Sunrise funicular costs same as daytime rides. Wake early and pay the same price for best views.
Bike rental for full day. €15-25/day cheaper than hourly rates if you're doing Ponale Trail (roughly 3 hours).
Eat at bars for aperitivo. €3.50-5 for drink + free snacks (€15+ value). Repeat once or twice instead of full dinners.
The Verdict
Riva del Garda is Lake Garda's best base for active travelers and those seeking local character. The sunrise funicular is the lake's best view. The Ponale Trail is the region's best bike ride. The waterfall walk is genuine nature.
Two to three days here beats one day at a southern town. Riva offers better hiking, water sports, and local atmosphere than touristy centers.
Don't skip it because it's "less famous." It's famous among people who actually know Lake Garda.
