The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are 400 metres apart on Museumplein. Most visitors to Amsterdam want to see both. Many don't have time for both. Here's how to decide.

The Core Difference

The Rijksmuseum is a broad Dutch history and art museum covering roughly 800 years of Dutch and Flemish art, including Rembrandt's Night Watch, Vermeer's Milkmaid, and thousands of other objects. You could spend a full day here and still not see everything. Most visitors do a focused three-hour pass through the key works.

The Van Gogh Museum is dedicated entirely to Vincent van Gogh. The collection traces his development as a painter across roughly a decade, from early dark and moody work to the bright, heavily textured paintings he's known for. It's a more contained experience — most visitors complete it in two to three hours.

Who Should Prioritise the Rijksmuseum

  • You're interested in Dutch Golden Age art, naval history, or the broader sweep of Netherlands cultural history
  • You have at least three hours to give it
  • You want variety — paintings, objects, furniture, weapons, ships
  • You've already seen the Van Gogh collection at another institution

Who Should Prioritise the Van Gogh Museum

  • Van Gogh's work is why you came to Amsterdam
  • You prefer depth over breadth in your museum visits
  • You have a shorter window — two hours is enough for a satisfying visit
  • You're visiting with people who find large museums overwhelming

Can You Do Both?

Yes, but not well in a single day. Rushing through the Rijksmuseum takes the pleasure out of it. Rushing through the Van Gogh Museum means you miss the context that makes the later works make sense.

A better approach: visit one properly on one day, and if you're staying long enough, return for the other. If you only have one shot, pick based on the interests listed above.

Practical Notes

Museumkaart: If you're visiting more than two museums, the Dutch Museums Card (Museumkaart) saves money and covers both. Buy it in advance to avoid the waiting period that applies to Van Gogh Museum entry on the day.

Booking: Both require advance booking. Van Gogh Museum slots fill faster. Book as early as possible for either.

Timing: Opening is around 9:00 AM for both. Arriving at opening avoids the worst of the midday crowds.

We recommend booking your timed entry for the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum through GetYourGuide, which often has slots when the direct museum sites are showing limited availability.
