Lake Bled is 55 km northwest of Ljubljana in the Gorenjska region at the foot of the Julian Alps. A glacial lake at 475 metres elevation, with a small island containing a Baroque church, a clifftop castle on the north shore, and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps providing the backdrop. The photographs are accurate. The lake looks like that.

Getting There

Bus (the standard option): several bus services run from Ljubljana Bus Station to Bled, taking 1–1.5 hours. Cost: approximately €7 each way. Buses run frequently through the day; the last return is in the early evening (check the current timetable). The bus drops at Bled bus stop, from which the lake is a short walk.

Train: trains run from Ljubljana to Lesce-Bled station (45 minutes), from which it is 4 km to the lake. A local bus or taxi covers this. Less convenient than the bus for a day trip.

Car: 45–55 minutes on the A2 motorway, with paid parking near the lake. Useful if combining with Vintgar Gorge or other stops. Parking at the lake fills quickly in summer.

Organised day tours: available via Viator and local operators, often combining Bled with Bohinj Lake or Vintgar Gorge. Transport handled; entry to the main sights included in some packages.

What to Do at Lake Bled

The Island (Blejski Otok): the only natural island in Slovenia. A Baroque church (Assumption of Mary) sits on the summit; 99 steps lead up from the shore. To reach the island: hire a traditional wooden rowing boat (pletna), which is rowed by a standing oarsman using a single oar. The pletna is the traditional and correct way to reach the island — the ride takes 15–20 minutes each way. Cost: approximately €18 per person for the round trip.

The wedding bell tradition: visitors to the church ring the wishing bell. This has been commercialised but remains a genuine part of the visit.

Bled Castle: above the north shore, accessible by a steep path (15 minutes) or a longer walk from the town. The castle contains a museum, a restaurant, and the views over the lake with the island and the Alps. Entry: approximately €15. The view from the castle terrace is the classic Bled photograph — lake, island, mountains.

Walking around the lake: the circumference path is 6 km and takes 1.5–2 hours. A good way to see the lake from multiple angles without paying for anything.

Bled cream cake (kremna rezina): a vanilla custard and whipped cream pastry between layers of puff pastry, served at the Park Hotel café since 1953. The Bled kremna rezina is a specific regional product; the Park Hotel has the most traditional version.

Vintgar Gorge (Blejski Vintgar)

4 km from Bled, the Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6 km wooden walkway through a narrow gorge carved by the Radovna River — turquoise water, waterfalls, pools. Entry: approximately €10. One of the most beautiful short walks in Slovenia. Accessible by bus from Bled in summer, on foot in under an hour from the lake.

Our Take

Bled is the right day trip from Ljubljana. Take the bus, row to the island, walk up to the castle for the photograph, eat a kremna rezina. Add Vintgar Gorge if you have the time — it is worth the extra hour.
