Yes, Barcelona is safe for tourists, and it's one of the most visited cities in Europe for good reason. But it also has one of the highest pickpocketing rates on the continent, and this affects a significant number of visitors every year. Being aware is the difference between a great trip and a wrecked one.

The Real Risks

Pickpocketing is endemic, especially on Las Ramblas, at La Boqueria market, on the L1 and L3 metro lines, and around Park Guell and Sagrada Familia. Teams operate in coordinated groups: a distraction technique (someone "accidentally" spilling something, someone asking for directions, a heated argument nearby) while a partner takes your bag or phone.

Bag snatching from motorbikes occurs, particularly on wider streets. Wear bags across your body on the inner side, away from traffic.

Unlicensed taxis at the airport are a persistent problem. Only use official taxis (black and yellow) or the Aerobús.

Late-night areas around the Gothic Quarter can attract groups of drunk tourists and opportunistic crime after midnight.

Solo Travel and Specific Groups

Solo female travelers generally feel safe in Barcelona during the day and evening. Be more cautious on late-night metro journeys and avoid the darker streets of the Gothic Quarter and El Raval alone after midnight.

Barcelona has a lively, visible LGBTQ+ scene centred on the Eixample neighbourhood (known locally as "Gayxample") and is a broadly welcoming city for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Practical Safety Tips

  • Use a money belt or inside pocket for passports and backup cash.
  • Never put a phone down on a restaurant table; keep it out of sight.
  • Use the official Aerobús or a licensed taxi from the airport, not unofficial drivers.
  • Keep bags fully zipped and held in front of you on the metro and at markets.
  • Consider leaving valuables in your hotel safe before visiting Las Ramblas or La Boqueria.
