Is 2 Days in Ljubljana Enough? Honest Answer

Two days in Ljubljana is more than enough for the city. Ljubljana is small, beautiful, and can be walked end to end in about twenty minutes. One full day covers everything the centre has to offer. A second day is for slowing down, doing a day trip to Lake Bled, or simply sitting by the Ljubljanica River with a coffee.

Two days in Ljubljana:

• The Old Town and Triple Bridge. The Baroque old town on the east bank of the river, with Preseren Square and the famous triple bridge designed by Joze Plecnik. This is the heart of the city and takes a couple of hours done properly.
• Ljubljana Castle. The hilltop castle above the Old Town has good views over the city and the surrounding mountains. The funicular makes the ascent easy. Allow ninety minutes.
• Metelkova and the Central Market. Plecnik's covered market along the river is one of the finest market buildings in Central Europe. Metelkova, the squat-turned-arts-district, is an unusual evening option.
• Lake Bled as a day trip on day two. The alpine lake with the island church and the cliff-top castle is one of the most photographed landscapes in Europe. It's forty-five minutes by bus or car from Ljubljana. This is the obvious use of your second day.

What You'll Miss

Two days in Ljubljana:

• Skocjan Caves. The UNESCO-listed cave system is ninety minutes from Ljubljana. It's extraordinary and almost always skipped because the journey takes too much of a short visit.
• The Slovenian countryside. The Soca Valley and the Triglav National Park are within reach of Ljubljana but need more than a day trip.

How to Make the Most of It

• Do the Old Town on day one, Lake Bled on day two. This is the obvious and correct structure for a two-day Ljubljana visit.
• Book the Bled transfer in advance if you're not driving. The public bus works but the tourist shuttle is faster and drops you at the lake.
• Stay in the Old Town or close to it. Ljubljana is small enough that location barely matters, but the Old Town keeps you in the atmosphere.
• Don't over-programme the Ljubljana day. The city rewards slow movement. A morning covering the main sights and an afternoon sitting by the river is a completely appropriate use of the day.
