Some city breaks disappoint. This is a fact of travel rather than a failure of planning. The honest framework is to diagnose the cause before deciding what to do about it, because some disappointments are fixable and some aren't.

The Fixable Causes

Wrong neighbourhood: If you're staying somewhere that doesn't match how you want to use the city, the trip feels off from the start. The fix is to spend the first morning of day two in a different area. Take public transport to a neighbourhood that looks more interesting and spend the whole morning there before deciding anything else.

No restaurant research: Food that misses consistently degrades a trip faster than almost anything else. The fix is a quick search on day one evening: find two or three places people have actually recommended recently, not from a glossy list but from recent reviews or local forums, and book one for tomorrow.

Over-scheduled: If you're exhausted and irritable by noon, the problem is usually too many bookings and too little slack. Cancel the afternoon sight. Sit somewhere and eat something slowly. The trip recovers.

The Unfixable Causes

Weather: If it's raining sideways in a city that was supposed to be sunny, you can adapt but you cannot fix it. Lean into indoor things. Accept the trip is a different version of itself.

Illness: The city cannot be assessed when you feel terrible. This is not a city problem. Come back.

Bad travel companion: The hardest one. A trip that is going wrong because the person you're with is making it go wrong is not recoverable mid-trip. You can manage the remaining days, limit the friction, and have an honest conversation on the flight home. But you cannot fix the fundamental mismatch in the middle of the trip.

The Partial Rescue

If the trip is salvageable, the partial rescue usually looks like this: change the area you're spending time in, eat one genuinely good meal (requires research, not luck), and lower the remaining agenda to things you actually want to do rather than things you feel you should see.

Some Cities Genuinely Don't Click

Some cities are not for some people and there is nothing wrong with that. Not every place that's consistently praised will land for you. A city break that doesn't work tells you something useful about your own preferences. The lesson is worth taking seriously.
