Book the event first, then book everything else. This sounds obvious and is still the mistake most people make. Event tickets released months before accommodation means you secure the main reason for going before the hotels around the venue triple in price.

The Booking Sequence

Event tickets first. Most major European football clubs release tickets six to eight weeks out for domestic matches and earlier for cup or European games. Set a reminder for the release date, buy the moment tickets go on sale, and only then start looking at flights and accommodation.

Flights second. Prices around major match days are higher but usually not dramatically so. Accommodation in the stadium neighbourhood is where the inflation is worst. Book a hotel two to three metro stops from the ground and the price difference is usually significant.

Accommodation Price Inflation

The day before, day of, and day after a major event: hotels within walking distance charge a premium. In cities that host regular major events, like Madrid, Munich, or London, the accommodation market is used to absorbing demand and the premium is moderate. In smaller cities hosting a one-off occasion, prices can be extreme. The fix is the same: stay further out and use public transport.

Beyond the Event

The cities that work best for this are the ones with enough to do that the event is the centrepiece rather than the only reason to go. Barcelona, Madrid, Amsterdam, Lisbon: all have enough that a non-fan partner is not sitting through a day of nothing. Cities that cope less well are those where the stadium is the entire draw and the surrounding area offers little outside match day.

Build two full days around the event rather than flying in and out in 24 hours. The event becomes part of a trip rather than the whole thing, and the city gets a proper chance.

The Non-Fan Partner Problem

Solve it directly. Give them a day with a clear plan that has nothing to do with sport. The stadium tour, if the partner has zero interest, is not the answer. The answer is: what does this city have that they specifically want to see? Book one thing for them in advance so it does not become a vague promise. It makes the whole trip better for both people.
