Bath is 1 hour 25 minutes from London Paddington by direct train, which technically makes it a day trip. The honest advice is to stay at least one night. Bath is compact and walkable, but it rewards time. The Roman Baths alone take two hours if you are doing them properly, and the city has a distinct character that takes an evening to absorb.

Why This Combination Works

London is one of the great cities of the world; Bath is one of the most beautiful small cities in England. They are different enough to feel like separate destinations, close enough to combine without effort. London gives you scale and energy; Bath gives you Georgian architecture, actual Roman history, and the chance to slow down.

Two to three days in London, one to two days in Bath. One night works well if your schedule is tight. Two nights lets you do the Roman Baths in the morning, the Royal Crescent and Circus in the afternoon, walk the canal towpath, and still have time for dinner without rushing.

Getting Between the Cities

Direct trains from London Paddington to Bath Spa run every 30 minutes or so. Journey time is approximately 1 hour 25 minutes. Off-peak advance tickets cost around £20 to £35 return. GWR is the main operator. Trains arrive directly in the city centre, and most of what you want to see in Bath is within easy walking distance of Bath Spa station.

Which City to Visit First

Do London first. Spend your main days there, then head to Bath as a relaxed close to the trip. Arriving in Bath after the intensity of London makes the city's pace feel like a genuine contrast rather than a step down.

What Each City Adds to the Trip

London

The museums, the variety of food, the theatre, the parks: London justifies multiple trips on its own. Use it as your primary base, plan your big-ticket sights there, and treat Bath as a purposeful extension rather than an afterthought.

Bath

The Roman Baths are genuinely impressive and the audio guide (narrated by Bill Bryson) is worth using. The Royal Crescent and the Circus are the definitive examples of Georgian urban planning and worth more than a quick photo. The Thermae Bath Spa offers rooftop outdoor pools with city views and needs to be booked in advance. Walking from the city centre along the River Avon or up to Alexandra Park takes less than 30 minutes and gives you a very different view of the city. Bath also has strong independent food and café culture, particularly around the covered market and Walcot Street.
