City breaks give you more story per day. Beach holidays give you more rest per day. The choice comes down to what you're actually tired of, not which one sounds like a holiday in the abstract.
What You're Tired Of
If you're tired of the city (the commute, the noise, the mental pace of urban life), a city break in someone else's city is not the answer. You'll enjoy it, probably, but you won't feel rested. You'll come back stimulated rather than recharged, which is worth something but is a different thing.
If you're tired of work, specifically of mental load and decisions and things to manage, a beach holiday is excellent. You hand control to the sun and the sea and the daily decision of where to put your towel. The cognitive rest is real.
If you're not particularly tired of anything and you just want a good few days, the city break produces more to talk about. More things happen. More decisions get made. The story has more in it.
The Hybrid That Fails
City for two nights, beach for three nights (or some variant) is usually neither properly. You spend the city days knowing you're about to leave, so you don't settle. You arrive at the beach carrying the pace of the city and spend a day decompressing before it's time to think about the return. Neither part gets what it needs.
The hybrid works when the city and the beach are genuinely integrated: Barcelona, Lisbon, Dubrovnik. Cities where you can walk from a neighbourhood you love to a stretch of water. In those cases it's not a hybrid, it's just one place with both qualities.
When the Beach Wins
You haven't stopped properly in months. You're genuinely burnt out rather than restless. You want to read three books in five days. You want to eat the same lunch two days in a row without it feeling wasteful. These are beach conditions. Go to the beach.
When the City Wins
You've been still for too long. The last holiday was passive and you came back bored. You want to come back with something to say. You want to understand somewhere new. The city produces more per day for people who need stimulation to feel good.
The Honest Question
Ask which version of yourself you're hoping to be when you come back: rested or enriched? Both are valid. They just require different trips.
