Ljubljana is a small capital — the entire visitor geography fits within a 20-minute walk. The neighbourhood decision matters less here than in larger cities, but there are meaningful differences in price, atmosphere, and what you'll experience walking out of your accommodation each morning.
Old Town (Staro Mesto): The Historic Core
The old town occupies the area between the Ljubljanica River and Castle Hill — the baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, the river cafes, the market arcades, the Dragon Bridge. Staying here puts you in the middle of the most attractive part of Ljubljana within immediate walking distance of everything.
Prices reflect the location. Hotels and apartments in the old town run higher than the city average, and some properties charge for the address. The streets closest to the river and the Triple Bridge are busiest with tourist foot traffic in summer; a little further toward the castle slopes quietens considerably.
Best for: first visits, short breaks, visitors who want to step outside into the old town immediately.
City Centre: Better Value, Still Central
The wider city centre — the area around Congress Square (Kongresni trg), the Ljubljana University buildings, and the grid streets running south and west from the old town — has a denser concentration of mid-range hotels, apartments, and guesthouses. The Miklošičeva cesta, the Art Nouveau boulevard running from the train station to Prešeren Square, passes through this area.
From any of these locations, the old town is five to ten minutes on foot. The streets feel more lived-in and less tourist-oriented than the riverside, and prices are generally 20–30% lower for comparable accommodation.
Best for: most visitors — good value, walkable to everything, more local atmosphere.
Metelkova: Bohemian and Nightlife-Adjacent
Metelkova is a former Yugoslav Army barracks complex taken over by artists and squatters in 1993 and maintained since as an autonomous cultural zone. It contains alternative music venues, galleries, a hostel, and is the centre of Ljubljana's alternative nightlife. The area is 10 minutes on foot from the old town.
Staying in the Metelkova area (the surrounding streets rather than the complex itself) puts you in a neighbourhood that feels distinctly different from the old town — more residential, less expensive, younger demographic.
Best for: long stays, budget travellers, those interested in Ljubljana's alternative scene.
Tivoli Area
The streets bordering Tivoli Park, west of the centre, have a residential quality and proximity to the park that suits visitors wanting green space over urban density. Slightly further from the old town but quieter.
Our Take
City centre for most visits — close enough to everything, noticeably better value than the old town hotels. Old town if the riverside setting matters and the budget allows. Metelkova if nightlife and the alternative scene are a priority.
