Bruges in July: What to Expect

Bruges in July looks exactly like the postcard. It also has more people in the frame than you might expect. Summer is peak season for one of Europe's most visited small cities, and July brings the highest visitor numbers of the year. Manage expectations and it's still wonderful.

Temperatures sit between 18°C and 24°C in July, occasionally warmer. It's pleasant rather than hot, and the canal-side setting makes the city feel cooler than the thermometer suggests. Belgium gets rain in any month, including July, so pack a light waterproof. Long evenings with sunset around 10pm give you good time after the day-trip crowds leave.

Crowds and Prices

Bruges receives a significant proportion of its visitors as day-trippers from Brussels, Ghent, and the UK. In July, the historic centre, Markt square, and the canal boat routes are at their busiest between 10am and 5pm. Staying overnight changes the experience entirely: the early mornings and evenings are calm, golden, and genuinely beautiful. Hotel prices reflect the peak season. Book well ahead, especially for canal-view rooms.

The Cactus Festival runs in early July at Minnewater Park, offering world music and a relaxed outdoor atmosphere. It's a good reason to visit specifically in early July before the school holiday crowds peak. Beer culture carries on year-round, and July's warm evenings make the outdoor terraces of the city's breweries and bars particularly appealing. Bruges Triennial art installations, which run every three years, attract additional visitors when active.

One Thing to Watch

The Markt square and the Burg are genuinely overwhelming in the middle of the day in July. Tour groups, horse carriages, and waffle tourists converge. The canal boat queues get long.
