Berlin is the answer everyone gives and it isn't wrong. But treating it as the only answer means missing what Amsterdam, Prague, Budapest, and Tbilisi (yes, Tbilisi) have been building for years. Here's an honest breakdown of where the scene actually lives across Europe.

The Cities

Berlin

The reputation is real and it's built on infrastructure that took thirty years to develop. The clubs that made Berlin famous operate in spaces — former power stations, industrial warehouses, river barges — that simply don't exist in other European cities, and the culture around them (door policies, darkness, 48-hour sets, no phones) is now the global benchmark. Best for: The originals. Industrial techno in the spaces that defined the genre.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam's electronic music scene is underappreciated because the city markets itself on other things. But the club infrastructure is serious: venues in the North across the IJ from Centraal Station have built a hard techno and experimental electronic scene with less attitude than Berlin and a more genuinely diverse crowd. The city also has a strong tradition in house and techno that predates most of what Berlin gets credit for. Shelter, De School (RIP), and Shelter North are reference points. Budapest

Prague

Prague gets dismissed as a stag do city and that's fair for certain postcodes. But Holešovice, the former industrial district in the north of the city, has a club and arts space scene that is quietly excellent. Cross Club is the landmark — a multi-level venue that looks like a science fiction fever dream and programmes serious electronic music. Best for: Industrial-space clubbing in a city nobody is competing with Berlin over.

Lisbon

Lisbon's club scene runs late by anyone's standards and is deeply serious about electronic music. The Alcantara and Santos waterfront districts host a cluster of venues that have been programming house and techno for over two decades. Lux Frágil is the institution — a three-floor space in an old cold storage warehouse by the river, with a residency history that reads like a who's who of European electronic music. The scene doesn't have the infrastructure of Berlin or Amsterdam but it has the energy of a city that hasn't been overrun yet.

Best for: Electronic music off the beaten track, before everyone else finds it.
