The BVG (Berlin's public transport authority) divides the city into three zones: A, B, and C. Most tourists waste money here by buying the wrong ticket or overthinking it. Here's the actual breakdown.

Zone A: Inner Berlin (What You Need)

Zone A is central Berlin—everything you care about as a tourist. It covers the city centre from Charlottenburg Palace in the west to Friedrichshain in the east, and from the Landwehr Canal north to Köpenick in the south.

If you're visiting the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Museum Island, East Side Gallery, or staying in Mitte, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg, or Neukölln, you only need an AB ticket. Zone A alone is sufficient.

A single AB ticket costs €3.80 and is valid for two hours. A 7-day AB pass is €38.

Zone B: Suburban Berlin (Skip This Unless You're Day-Tripping)

Zone B extends from the outer edge of Zone A to the city limits. Potsdam (a major day trip) sits just outside Berlin's zones entirely, requiring a special ticket. Most of Zone B is residential suburbs you won't visit.

The only reasons to buy an AB ticket that includes B:

  • You're staying in the far suburbs and commuting daily
  • You're visiting Schloss Charlottenburg or Grunewald (both technically border Zone B, though Charlottenburg can be reached on Zone A with a short walk from Charlottenburg U-Bahn)
  • You're making a quick trip to a lakeside beach community

Most tourists don't need Zone B.

Zone C: Beyond the City

Zone C covers everything beyond Zone B—small towns, countryside, and the airport (BER requires an ABC ticket or separate airport ticket). Unless you're doing a multi-city excursion to Potsdam or beyond, ignore Zone C entirely.

Potsdam technically requires a separate ABC ticket or Berlin Day Ticket covering all zones, so if that's on your itinerary, plan accordingly. The ABC 7-day pass is €52—only worth it if you're regularly leaving Berlin.

Which Ticket Should You Buy?

Single Journey: €3.80 for AB (valid 2 hours, any route within those zones). Scratch cards available at machines and kiosks.

Day Pass (24-hour): €9 for AB, €10 for ABC. Valid from when you validate it until midnight the same day.

7-Day Pass: €38 for AB, €52 for ABC. This is the best value for a week-long visit.

Welcome Card: Tourist card including accommodation discounts and public transport. €29.50 (72-hour AB), €39 (72-hour ABC). Only worth it if you're staying in an expensive area and want discounts at museums.

For most tourists staying 3-7 days in central Berlin, buy the 7-day AB pass for €38 at the airport or any BVG ticket machine. It covers unlimited journeys on U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses, and trams.

How Tickets Work in Practice

Buy your ticket before boarding. Validate it in the machine at the station entrance (tap your card or insert your paper ticket). On trains, guards randomly check tickets—they'll fine you €60 if you can't show a valid ticket.

The system is honour-based: no turnstiles, no gates. But German efficiency means they patrol frequently, and they take it seriously.

Confusing Grey Areas

Airport Express (FEX): Requires a separate €11 ticket, though some passes cover it. The S-Bahn is cheaper and included in all zone tickets.

Night Buses (N1, N2, etc.): Covered under your zone ticket. No extra charge, though they run less frequently late at night.

Day Trips:

  • Potsdam (UNESCO palaces, nice gardens): Requires ABC ticket or separate Potsdam ticket. Better to buy ABC 7-day if you're going.
  • Oranienburg (Sachsenhausen concentration camp memorial): Zone C. Buy ABC or day pass.

Download the BVG Tickets app before you arrive. You can buy single tickets and passes digitally, which saves time and eliminates the confusion of ticket machines (which only have German/English interfaces).

Never buy individual tickets unless you're staying less than 24 hours. The math is brutal: seven single journeys (one week) cost €26.60 versus the €38 week pass. The pass pays for itself in five journeys.

If you're staying in Zone A but making day trips outside Berlin, the 7-day ABC pass (€52) becomes worth considering. But genuinely, most Berlin visitors do fine with AB.
