Bangkok in May: What to Expect

May in Bangkok is the start of the wet season. The monsoon begins, heat stays high, and the city shifts into its low-season tourism pattern. That means lower prices and fewer international tourists. If you can handle the heat and the rain, May is perfectly viable for Bangkok, and some of the most dramatic and photogenic weather happens during monsoon season.

Weather

May in Bangkok sees temperatures of 28C to 35C with growing humidity. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms become regular from mid-May onward. These storms are usually intense but short-lived, clearing quickly. Mornings tend to be clearer. A compact umbrella is worth having. Light, breathable clothing is essential; anything that does not dry quickly is a problem.

Crowds and Prices

May is low to mid-season in Bangkok. International tourist numbers drop after the April Songkran period. Hotels and guesthouses are cheaper than in the cool, dry peak season (November to February). Flights are generally lower. The major tourist sites (Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun) are open and accessible with shorter queues than peak season.

What's On

Visakha Bucha Day (Buddha Day) falls on the full moon of the sixth lunar month, often in May. It is one of the three most important Buddhist holidays in Thailand. Temples are beautifully lit, monks perform ceremonies, and the city takes on a reflective character. Check the specific date for your year. Labour Day is 1 May, a public holiday with some business closures.

One Thing to Watch

The outdoor markets, rooftop bars, and street food areas that make Bangkok brilliant are affected by May rain. Chatuchak Weekend Market is still excellent but bring an umbrella. Rooftop bars can close on rainy evenings. Build flexibility into your itinerary for afternoon rain. The good news is that Bangkok's air conditioning culture means indoor options (malls, air-conditioned restaurants, museums) are excellent and available everywhere.
