April in Bangkok is hot, loud, and unforgettable if you are there for Songkran. Thai New Year runs from 13 to 15 April and turns the city into the world's largest water fight. It is also the hottest month of the year. Come knowing exactly what you are in for and you will love it. Come expecting a quiet cultural city break and you will struggle.

Weather

April is Bangkok's hottest month. Temperatures regularly hit 36C to 38C with high humidity. There is minimal rainfall before the wet season kicks in from May onward. This is intense heat by any standard. If you are sensitive to extreme temperatures, budget more time indoors (temples, air-conditioned malls, museums) and plan outdoor sightseeing for early mornings only.

Crowds and Prices

Songkran is Bangkok's busiest domestic travel period. Thais travel home for the festival, which means domestic transport fills up weeks in advance. International tourists arrive specifically for the water festival. Hotels in the tourist areas of Silom, Sukhumvit, and Khao San Road charge premium rates for the 12 to 16 April window. Book accommodation several weeks ahead if you want anything central and reasonably priced.

What's On

Songkran (13 to 15 April) is the headline. Silom Road and Khao San Road become the epicentres of water fights. Nobody is exempt: expect to be soaked. Keep your phone, passport, and wallet in waterproof bags. The religious side of Songkran is also worth experiencing: temple visits, merit-making, the ceremonial pouring of water over Buddha statues and the hands of elders.

Outside of Songkran, April evenings are good for rooftop bars and night markets when temperatures drop slightly. The Chao Phraya river cruise is pleasant at dusk.

One Thing to Watch

Everything not in a waterproof bag will get wet during Songkran. Plan for it. More practically: from 12 to 16 April many businesses, including some restaurants and shops, reduce hours or close entirely as staff travel home for the holiday. Stock up on essentials beforehand and have backup plans for meals. Tuk-tuk and taxi availability drops during peak festival days.
