Timed entry is now standard across Amsterdam's main museums. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, Stedelijk — they all require pre-booked slots. The upside is that you no longer queue for an hour outside. The downside is that you need to plan ahead, and certain time slots are genuinely harder to get than others.

Why Morning Slots Are Different

The first two slots of the day — typically 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM — are different in character from anything that follows. Three things happen that don't apply to afternoon visits.

Lower crowd density: Most tourists don't like early starts. Tour groups rarely arrive before 10:00 AM. At the Rijksmuseum, a 9:00 AM entry means you can stand in front of the Night Watch for several minutes without another visitor walking into the frame.

Better energy: Museums are calmer in the morning. The buildings feel different when they're not already busy.

More time flexibility: Book 9:00 AM and you can extend your visit until midday if you want. Book 14:00 and you'll still need to leave by closing time.

The Actual Trick

The morning slot trick is simple: when booking, filter for the earliest available time. If 9:00 AM is taken on your preferred date, check 9:30 AM. Then 10:00 AM. Early slots go first, but they also come back — people book them and cancel when travel plans change.

Set a reminder to check again about two weeks before your visit. Cancellations open up early slots more frequently than most people expect.

Which Museums Release Slots This Way

Rijksmuseum: Opens at 9:00 AM. First slot is best. Booking available through the official site; third-party sites like GetYourGuide sometimes have availability when the museum site shows none.

Van Gogh Museum: Opens at 9:00 AM most days. First slot is in highest demand and usually books out first.

Anne Frank House: Opens at 9:00 AM. Slots released six weeks in advance; Sunday releases are covered in the Anne Frank House booking guide.

Stedelijk Museum: Easier to book on shorter notice. Still worth going early if you want the galleries to yourself.

What to Do If Morning Slots Are Gone

Late afternoon — the last hour before closing — is the second-best option for crowd avoidance. Most day-trippers finish their museum visits by 4:00 PM, and timed entry means the space doesn't refill. The downside is that some rooms start closing earlier than the advertised closing time.

We recommend checking GetYourGuide for timed entry alongside the official museum sites — it often surfaces early slots that look unavailable elsewhere.

Our Amsterdam guide covers which rooms and floors to prioritise if you have a limited window, so you can make the most of an early entry slot without spending time navigating the whole building.
